Search

Thank you for reading my first ever posting in this blog titled "Tips for Home PC". No doubt, one of the best technologies in our lifetime is the Internet. But of course without the invention of the personal computer, there would be no use for the Internet. I assume you have a home PC and Internet access otherwise you wouldn't be reading this blog :-p As we rely more on the Internet, search becomes all the more crucial. We search for gifts, search for books, search for games online, search for cooking tips, search for this... search for that... That's why I have decided to cover search in this posting. One of the best applications I have downloaded FREE from the Internet is the Google Desktop application. Once Google Desktop has been installed, the software could index (at your preference of course) your Emails, Chats, URL's browsed, Media files (mp3, mov etc), Documents (Text, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, PDF), Contacts, Calendar, Tasks, Notes, Journal and Zip files. By "Index", I mean just like the index at the back of your book. If you want to locate any information in the book, just flip to the index and look for keywords. So once the files in your computer have been indexed, you just type in the keyword of what you think the filename is. Say you are looking for the resumé which you last created and it is stored somewhere in the hard disk, you know it's there but you just couldn't recall which folder it was saved in, with Google Desktop fret no more. Just type in "resume" and instantly (yes instantly!!) you see a list of all filenames associated with resume. Cool ya! Ok ok.. so can't wait to use Google Desktop? Just go to http://desktop.google.com/. Drop me a posting or two about your experience.
